This was the toughest location to find as the guide had told us it is next to the new custom office . On reaching the new customer office no on had even heard of a museum in this area !! Asked the taxi divers drew a blank. Was getting late for the walk. Went to the royal bombay sea men society and non of them knew about a museum. Saying i was told new customer office did not help till one guy said there is a circle ahead.
This all was 10 meters from the new customer office and 20 meters from the seaman’s society.
Lesson learnt. DO NOT ask for a museum (no one knows)
DO no ask for ballad bunder, ballad bunder gate, ballad bunder gatehouse no one knows that too.
This small nondescript museum is located opposite to the state bank of india ballard estate branch.
Ballard BunderThe Balled bunder museum is a mini-museum in the former Ballard Bunder Gate.

The gatehouse has now been developed into a museum, and it is a treasure trove of photographs about Bombay, it’s port, it’s people, and -of interest to us – it’s railways, and the port railways! Many rare photographs of railway activity, detailed accounts, histories, full marks to the Navy for this superb effort. irfca.org
Ask for the Darabshaw house (the museum is located opposite to the Darabshaw house) the state bank is also housed in the Darabshaw house (originally called Ajam building and housed the regent hotel)

Bunder is a Persian word meaning “port” and “haven”. Etymologically it combines Persian Band (enclosed) and dar (gate, door) meaning “an enclosed area” (i.e. protected from the sea).

Built in 1920 — the same time as Gateway of India and Ballard Estate — the similarity in architectural features suggests it was designed by the same architect, George Wittettimesofindia.indiatimes.com
Ballard Estate is named after
General John Archibald Ballard, baronet (1829-1880), who belonged to the Royal Engineers and was the first chairman of the Bombay Port Trust, from 1873 to 1876
Ballard Estate was the first systematically planned commercial precinct in the city
The protected precinct has a large number of heritage buildings characterised by their “European Renaissance” style, uniform designs, and similarity of scale and heights. While street edges are well-preserved, several buildings have built porches and additions and some facades need restoration and structural repair.still the century-old stateliness remains. Take a walk with us this Sunday, through the streets of Ballard Estate and discoverthe dignity of the Port Trust Memorialthe Ballard Bunder Museumthe grandeur of the Grand Hotel and much much more. theviewfromtheground.com
